Hey beauties! Lately, I've been taking a closer look at some of my skin care products and really dissecting and researching its ingredients and I'm not liking what I'm seeing. And if you check the labels of some of your favorite products you too may see ingredients such as diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine which are hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing agents typically found in shampoos, soaps, bubble baths and facial cleansers. I've also seen color pigments, fragrances, phthalates and parabens (preservatives in cosmetics which are carcinogenic particularly linked to breast cancer). Mineral oil is also another ingredient that prevents the skin from breathing, absorbing and excreting. Talc, petrolatum, sodium lauryl sulfate an sodium laureth sulfate are also very toxic chemicals that may be absorbed into your skin daily depending on the products you're using.
Many times when we wear makeup, we're looking to conceal blemishes ad/or enhance our features. But the ultimate goal is to have overall healthy skin that doesn't have to be concealed. Along with a balanced nutrition that includes water and plenty of fruits and vegetables of course, it's important to understand what our skin is taking in daily. And LifeOrganics is one product line I truly enjoy using. If you've attended a Makeup and Martinis Chicago event, you surely have experienced some of their amazing products in our gift bags.
I've been using the Soothing Face Wash and Face Serum and I'm in love! The soothing face wash is very lightweight and I feel like it allows my skin to breathe. Since I tend to wear makeup often, I like to make sure I'm removing all the residue that makeup can leave behind so I start off by using Kirk's Natural Castile Soap which my husband actually put me on to about a month ago. I then follow up with LifeOrganics Soothing Face Wash and then I end my skin care regimen with LifeOrganics Face Serum. This serum almost looks like a body butter but it's for your face! I love it as it moisturizes my skin but is also great preparation for when I apply my makeup again. My face is naturally oily but I find that this serum moisturizes my face without me feeling to shiny or greasy. And these are all 100% natural products that you can feel comfortable with when reading the labels. Now I must say, I had to kind of rearrange my skin care budget just a little bit as these products are a little higher than the cost of your regular drugstore brand cosmetics. But, a little goes a long way with these products which allows you to not have to buy as often and I love the idea of supporting some amazing small businesses which actually aids in supporting the economy and creating jobs for others. So check it out and let me know what you think!
The one thing I used to recommend to brides were individual lashes instead of strip lashes when I would apply their makeup. And not because it cost more but because of the overall natural look it would provide. I also liked the idea of being able to manipulate the look a little better such as applying a couple of lashes to the corners of the eye or even applying individuals excessively to give lashes a very full look. Aaahhh, I really used to love that. So what changed?
I used to freelance for a company that would literally make us apply individual lashes over and over again without applying any makeup so that we would get very skilled at it. Well, that's when I started to hate it and I just wanted to go back to the convenience of applying strip lashes. But then I found my love for it again when I had the opportunity of providing makeup services for a wedding this past Sunday. Actually, on the day of the bride's wedding, I applied strip lashes. But she called me the day after her wedding while preparing to go to the Dominican Republic for her honeymoon and asked me to apply strip lashes. My feelings were mixed but I was just happy that she liked my work enough to call me the day after her wedding to service her again.
Needless to say, her lashes looked gorgeous and I fell in love again. She even taught me a trick and stated that she likes to line her lash line with black lash adhesive once her lashes have been applied to make them stay even longer. I would probably use clear adhesive for versatility but I love that my clients not only can learn from me but I can learn from them as well.
Remember to not confuse applying individual lashes with lash extension treatments which typically requires a specific certification. But if you're interested in the natural looking approach that can last anywhere between 1-3 weeks depending on your physical activity and daily beauty regimen and you're not interested in spending a few hundred dollars, try applying individual lashes.
I read a really cool article the other day about what your makeup says about you by the Beauty Riot Diva on Yahoo's Beauty on Shine Blog. So look at what a combination of makeup artists and beauty professionals say about your look and tell me what you think and/or if any of these rings true to you:
1. Smokey Eye Makeup-
Women who wear smoky eye makeup tend to be on the mysterious side. You give off the message that you're "a sultry woman with a good sense of your own sexuality and inner power".
2. Red lipstick-
Wearing red lipstick indicates that you are powerful, confident, and have no fear. This makes you very intentional in your actions. You're a go-getter -- you know what you want, and you go after it.
3. Cat eye makeup-
This classic look isn't for everyone, so if you can pull it off, it means you're "expressive and confident in your inner beauty."
4. Pastel eyeshadow-
Are pastels your go-to palette of choice? Then these characteristics probably describe you perfectly: innocent, feminine, carefree, and a natural belle.
5. Nude Lips-
Nude lips are usually worn by a woman who understands balance. You don't feel the need to please people, because you're not afraid of what others think.
6. False lashes-
Two words: high maintenance. It is way too much work to wear fake lashes all the time. And during the day, they look just like they're described -- fake. After all, you don't need all that glam during the day (unless you're a reality show star), so it can look like you're trying to hide who you really are.
So I know it's kind of sad that I rarely do any product reviews on my site. There are a couple of reasons for this. Well, let's begin with the obvious. If no one is sending me complimentary products to test, then there's no review, lol. But also, I love talking about a product that basically works wonders for all skin types and tones. Kryolan Anti-Shine Powder is that product, that needle in the haystack, that crystal gem so to speak. And for us naturally shiny beauties, this is truly an answer to our prayers.
A couple of months ago, I was reading up on Kryolan's Products and came across their anti-shine translucent powder. Pretty much every review I read, it received like 4 or 5 stars. Reviewers kept posting about how lightweight this powder was on the skin and how it didn't leave that unsightly white cast behind (i.e. the ghostly look). So I was super geeked. And then I saw how much a 30 gram jar cost and I was sold! Also, one of my fav celebrity makeup artists, Merrell Hollis swears by it. On average, you will be able to purchase this amazing product for about $16.85. I've also seen it at it's highest for about $20. I was able to snag mine from this year's Makeup Show at the Alcone Company Booth for about $10.
Again, I have been using this product for about 2 weeks straight at this point and it has done wonders! No shine, extremely lightweight with a beautiful matte finish, no white cast, no "cake face", and it truly sets my entire makeup application beautifully. I also used this product on a friend of mines at her 10 year wedding anniversary party this weekend and she too is a shiny beauty :). But this product did wonders for her even after dancing all night long. So again, I rarely do reviews so this must be something special and I encourage you to try this product especially at such an amazing cost. Check it out on amazon.com or if you'd rather visit the Kryolan store in Chicago you can purchase it at 2034 N. Halsted, Chicago, Illinois 60614. Enjoy beauties!

Wow, where has the time gone? It's almost been two years since I officially started Makeup and Martinis Chicago. As a matter of fact, it was August of 2011 when I held my very first event to be exact. What many don't know is that I began freelancing as a makeup artist in 2006 while I was working as a school social worker. As I was advertising my services, I would invite people over to the clubhouse in my subdivision of where I lived to get their makeup done and enjoy a great martini. This was all prior to 2011. I would do these gatherings once a year but it started getting a little overwhelming and I couldn't handle all the women wanting to be serviced so I brought on more makeup artists.
The early years before Makeup and Martinis Chicago was born
Hence, this is how Makeup and Martinis Chicago was officially born. It was a simple idea that was also a gift and passion of mine that I wanted to share with others. As I continued to do what I loved, I started getting more and more ideas and concepts. It's amazing how you can start off by yourself and maybe 4 or 5 people attending a gathering. And then in a matter of 2 years, you're no longer by yourself. I now have 5 makeup artists on my team including myself, 1 hairstylist, 3 nail techs, 5 massage therapists, a bartender, a really cool photographer and videographer, a creative consultant and an amazing network of supportive business professionals.
At this stage in my business, I'm kind of like a toddler. I've mastered how to stand on my own two feet. I can walk, I can run, I have quite a few words in my repertoire, I'm understanding the basic business concepts, I'm making connections and I'm truly absorbing everything like a sponge. I'm also making the distinction between what's right and what's wrong for my business and I'm really learning. I'm in my foundation building years and I'm truly appreciative of my amazing team and the many supporters of this company. We have so much to do and share with you, one step at a time.
And for some of the aspiring entrepreneurs (because we're all entrepreneurs believe it or not), I was thinking of stating some things that have helped me along the way but honestly, I'm still learning and growing so I don't have any definitive answers. But some things that I try to apply to my daily living is to just understand how blessed I am. This means subtracting money, titles, the people I know, the things I have acquired and understanding that after all of that is taken away, I am still blessed. Why? Because I'm choosing to focus on things that give me reason to believe that I am. I cannot create an earth, a sky, rainbows etc but it's there and I'm able to wake up to that. As long as I have that, everything else is icing on the cake.
There's so much that I have that I don't need but it's there for me. So when I'm navigating my business, I think about the business as just the icing on the cake. It doesn't define me, it doesn't control me, it isn't the end all be all, it isn't my life. It is something I'm choosing to share with the world because God gifted me with the talent and the knowledge base. Of course, I want to succeed, of course I want to acquire money and things while doing it but that's only one aspect of my purpose. There are many times I have to reevaluate and/or restructure, reflect, take a break and rejuvenate. This helps me to see business with a different mindset. When I view it from that standpoint, I'm much more happier and I see success as an ongoing process.
Remember to be certain of who you are and that God has gifted you with so much more than a brand and/or an image. You're more than that. Your business is just the icing on the cake. So with that being said, here's to almost 2 years of learning, growing, stretching, crying, being overwhelmed, being frustrated, and being confused. But also maturing and understanding hard work, building relationships, praying, stepping out of my comfort zone, setting boundaries but also taking risks, sometimes being contradictory, being knowledgable, being honest, being friendly and sharing. The answer is there is no answer because it's a journey. And it can be a very rewarding journey if you choose to sit back, relax, sip some tea, pray and know that your business is just a small portion of your purpose. Cheers!
I was talking to a friend the other day who seriously had me laughing out loud. She was talking about a man she found extremely attractive for some time now but then she had the opportunity to look at him up close and she said, "You know, he's flawed just like I am. His teeth aren't all that straight and he has wrinkles too."
It's funny because we put a lot and I mean a lot of pressure on ourselves to be so perfect and for what? Even some of our favorite celebs are flawed. With the right lighting, angles, airbrushing and photoshop, of course you could look perfect too. But would you really want to? All I know is once you see these images of some of your favorite celebs up close, you may not be as hard on yourself. Everything from bad makeup jobs, crows feet and wrinkles, stained teeth, female mustaches large pores, major blemishes/breakouts and everything in between, you'll be amazingly surprised! Enjoy and don't be scared :)

For those of us artsy and creative folks, we're always inspired by something or someone that sparks us to create. It can be a beautiful landscape, it can be the use of colors or it can be a person. Many makeup artists haves muses and I think I have found mine, yaaay!!!
I'm not a huge reality television show fan but a while back I was watching an episode of Love and Hip Hop Atlanta (lol, don't judge me :). But there's an extremely beautiful woman on this show by the name of Erica Dixon. Now I thought she was beautiful on the show but when I saw some of her modeling skills, I was blown away. Her look is just so exciting to me. She has nice almond shaped eyes, very full lips and nose and gorgeous cocoa skin. She truly inspires me artistically. So Ms. Erica if you're viewing this blog post, have your people call my people (i.e. me, lol) and let's create!
Makeup and Martinis Chicago extends a very warm thank you to all that attended and supported our first Mother's Day Brunch which took place in Joliet, Illinois at the beautiful Lakewood Prairie Clubhouse. Again, we thank you. Please enjoy this amazing recap of the event. Cheers!
