Well beauties, it's that time of year when so many people are excited about future endeavors and/or resolutions. Many times, emotions are running high and resolutions are made but rarely do you hear about people making resolutions regarding their overall beauty regimen. So let's start the year off right with some easy and attainable goals that applies to your beauty!
1. Wash your face every morning and evening, even if you're not wearing makeup. Try Seacret Deep Cleansing Facial Wash (retail $39.99, and $25.99 if you are a preferred customer).
2. Moisturize, moisturize and moisturize even more especially during colder months. The Intensive Moisture Face by Seacret is also a great choice as it contains Dead Sea Minerals to replenish moisture all day long and protects the skin against Free-Radicals (retail $64.95, and $38.99 if you are a preferred customer).
3. Cleanse ALL beauty tools at least weekly including makeup brushes and sponges. This will aid in avoiding breakouts and/or infections. I typically only use my sponges once and throw them away. Try Studio Tools Latex Sponges from Target ($2.79). I also like to deep clean my brushes with 90% alcohol first and then use Sonia Kashuk Brush and Sponge Cleanser ($6.99).
4. Remember to pay attention to the expiration date on all makeup including mascara, lipsticks/glosses, foundation, blushers etc. If you forget how long you've had a product such as mascara or lip colors, one rule of thumb, smell it. Trust me you'll be able to tell it's time to toss it.
5. Remember what goes in your body will reflect on the outside so remember to add fruits, vegetables and water to your daily intake. If you're a smoker and/or heavy alcohol drinker, make this the year to take it one step at a time and diminish this behavior through strategic planning. Alcohol typically dries out the skin and of course there are many health complications that can result from smoking. Create a daily success chart and get an accountability partner if you have to. Taking these steps is one of the best decisions you could ever make.

When it comes to makeup, I truly enjoy the soft, clean look. I'm not really into heavy contouring and extremely defined eyebrows. That's just not my preference and if you've ever sat in my chair, you've definitely experienced a softer look. I love the natural beauty that we all possess, and I like to bring that to the forefront rather than hide it. If I had to pick a celebrity look that I really like, I would have to go with Hayden Panettiere. Hayden definitely gives you the "girl next door" look. She does not have overly defined and/or striking features but she is a beauty. I like that in every picture I see of her, her makeup says "simplicity at its best". In the photos below, you'll see Hayden with both natural and dramatic looks and yet and still they are both breathtaking.
To achieve these looks, stick with a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream for a more natural look. Definitely be very generous with your mascara to bring out your eyes. Dab a little bit of concealer underneath the eyes and blend your pressed or loose powder with a stipple foundation brush. Add a bronzer or blusher to the apple of your cheeks and last but not least enhance your pout with a little gloss and go. For a more dramatic eye, just add a darker eyeshadow to the crease of your lids or to the lash line and brush upward.
Over the past couple of weeks, I've had the pleasure of working with two beautiful teens. Homecoming season just passed and it prompted me to blog about teen makeup, specifically foundation. Quick beauty tip for teens: Don't forget that your skin is still developing and is probably in the best condition it will ever be. So no need to pile on the foundation. Opt for a tinted moisturizer instead. I've always been a fan of Aveda's Tinted Moisturizer because it's all inclusive with a built in moisturizer and SPF. It also has amazing staying power. This tinted moisturizer also is a huge benefit for the mature woman as it does not accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. If you're really set on using a cream foundation, stick with a foundation that has buildable coverage or try using a foundation thinner such as RCMA's Foundation Thinner for a more transparent coverage. Remember less is more! Check out these teen beauties below:
Hi beauties! I'm so excited to do this quick product review on Ben Nye Mojave Adjuster. I was doing makeup for a wedding this past Saturday in which the bride is actually my cousin! Stephanie is such a natural beauty and because of that, I wanted to be extremely cautious of how I would do her makeup. I wanted to really showcase how beautiful she really is without altering the essence of her beauty both inside and out.
Overall, Stephanie's skin tone is pretty even so I wanted to make sure that when I was preparing to contour and highlight her face, I didn't want it to appear overdone and harsh. I wanted all the colors to "marry" one another and blend so well that her makeup would give the appearance of second skin. So I started out with priming her face, applying her eyeshadow, then filling in her brows just a bit and applying her foundation. After that, I actually applied the Ben Nye Mojave Adjuster in Burnt Orange underneath her eyes. I was more interested in adjusting her natural skin tone as opposed to concealing it. Too much of this adjuster would have been too heavy on her skin and would've counteracted what I wanted to accomplish.
This product comes in a .3 oz jar but don't be fooled by the size because a little goes a looong way, approximately 50-200 applications. And the cost on average is about $10/jar. This is such an amazing product for ethnic skin tones as it assists with hyper pigmentation and discoloration. Very great product that sustains, and gives a more natural look without it looking too thick and cakey. It's definitely a winner in my book!
Once, I applied the adjuster, I patted my ring finger very lightly under both of her eyes to blend. I wanted the adjuster to fade into her skin rather than sit on top of it. I began blending all the makeup together and setting it with a loose powder. I applied her blush, bronzer and lip color. Check out the transformation below:

Hey beauties! Lately, I've been taking a closer look at some of my skin care products and really dissecting and researching its ingredients and I'm not liking what I'm seeing. And if you check the labels of some of your favorite products you too may see ingredients such as diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine which are hormone-disrupting chemicals that can form cancer-causing agents typically found in shampoos, soaps, bubble baths and facial cleansers. I've also seen color pigments, fragrances, phthalates and parabens (preservatives in cosmetics which are carcinogenic particularly linked to breast cancer). Mineral oil is also another ingredient that prevents the skin from breathing, absorbing and excreting. Talc, petrolatum, sodium lauryl sulfate an sodium laureth sulfate are also very toxic chemicals that may be absorbed into your skin daily depending on the products you're using.
Many times when we wear makeup, we're looking to conceal blemishes ad/or enhance our features. But the ultimate goal is to have overall healthy skin that doesn't have to be concealed. Along with a balanced nutrition that includes water and plenty of fruits and vegetables of course, it's important to understand what our skin is taking in daily. And LifeOrganics is one product line I truly enjoy using. If you've attended a Makeup and Martinis Chicago event, you surely have experienced some of their amazing products in our gift bags.
I've been using the Soothing Face Wash and Face Serum and I'm in love! The soothing face wash is very lightweight and I feel like it allows my skin to breathe. Since I tend to wear makeup often, I like to make sure I'm removing all the residue that makeup can leave behind so I start off by using Kirk's Natural Castile Soap which my husband actually put me on to about a month ago. I then follow up with LifeOrganics Soothing Face Wash and then I end my skin care regimen with LifeOrganics Face Serum. This serum almost looks like a body butter but it's for your face! I love it as it moisturizes my skin but is also great preparation for when I apply my makeup again. My face is naturally oily but I find that this serum moisturizes my face without me feeling to shiny or greasy. And these are all 100% natural products that you can feel comfortable with when reading the labels. Now I must say, I had to kind of rearrange my skin care budget just a little bit as these products are a little higher than the cost of your regular drugstore brand cosmetics. But, a little goes a long way with these products which allows you to not have to buy as often and I love the idea of supporting some amazing small businesses which actually aids in supporting the economy and creating jobs for others. So check it out and let me know what you think!
The one thing I used to recommend to brides were individual lashes instead of strip lashes when I would apply their makeup. And not because it cost more but because of the overall natural look it would provide. I also liked the idea of being able to manipulate the look a little better such as applying a couple of lashes to the corners of the eye or even applying individuals excessively to give lashes a very full look. Aaahhh, I really used to love that. So what changed?
I used to freelance for a company that would literally make us apply individual lashes over and over again without applying any makeup so that we would get very skilled at it. Well, that's when I started to hate it and I just wanted to go back to the convenience of applying strip lashes. But then I found my love for it again when I had the opportunity of providing makeup services for a wedding this past Sunday. Actually, on the day of the bride's wedding, I applied strip lashes. But she called me the day after her wedding while preparing to go to the Dominican Republic for her honeymoon and asked me to apply strip lashes. My feelings were mixed but I was just happy that she liked my work enough to call me the day after her wedding to service her again.
Needless to say, her lashes looked gorgeous and I fell in love again. She even taught me a trick and stated that she likes to line her lash line with black lash adhesive once her lashes have been applied to make them stay even longer. I would probably use clear adhesive for versatility but I love that my clients not only can learn from me but I can learn from them as well.
Remember to not confuse applying individual lashes with lash extension treatments which typically requires a specific certification. But if you're interested in the natural looking approach that can last anywhere between 1-3 weeks depending on your physical activity and daily beauty regimen and you're not interested in spending a few hundred dollars, try applying individual lashes.
